NASCAR ' Jimmie Johnson Sets the Pace in Kentucky ' A Bumpy Track and a Heat Wave Predicted to be a Factor

Through scorching heat and violent wind storms, Jimmie Johnson showed them all how it was done when he qualified in Kentucky on Friday afternoon. After 42 cars had run their laps Jimmie Johnson waited in the wings to get his run in. Ripping around the 1.5-mile speedway in 29.700 seconds (181.818 mph) was good enough to win the pole for Sunday's Quaker State 400.

'It was a good lap ' qualifying has not been our strong suit in the last couple of years,' Johnson said. 'I'm very happy to get this pole today. My Chevy's bad fast, and I'm looking forward to going racing.

'I've had a lot of crashes here over the years. We used to test here a lot back in the day, and Turns 3 and 4 have taken quite a few [No.] 48 race cars from us. To run well last year (third at Kentucky) was really good for me. I came back with a lot of confidence. Conditions earlier today were so slick that it took a while to get the feeling I was looking for, but I think we're on the right track now.'

Kyle Busch (181.421 mph) qualified second, followed by his Joe Gibbs Racing teammateDenny Hamlin (181.147 mph).Kevin Harvick will start fourth after a lap at 180.367 mph, one spot ahead ofRyan Newman (180.337 mph).

Kentucky is best know for the traffic hassles that plagued the race last year but official say they have everything under control this time around.  But no one can do anything about the scorching temperatures.  The only bright side to the heat, is that it will be cooler at race time as the sun goes down into the evening.  Couple the heat with a bumpy race track and there is a volatile mix for frustration and anger to make things even more interesting out on the track.

Kesolowski and Montoya already had issues with each other only 5 minutes into Happy Hour.  Kesolowski's team decided to go to a back up car while Montoya opted to repair the original car.  After their on track bump and grind session with each other Kesolowski volunteered to go to the Hauler to discuss the situation.

'The bumps are very difficult to navigate here at Kentucky,' said Brad Keselowski. 'It produces a race track that, by its very nature, is hard to be consistent to drive because it's hard to hit the same bump twice, even in a race car as a supposedly professional driver.

'We can't hit the same bumps twice, whether it's passing traffic or tire fall-off that changes the way our car enters the corner. ' Each bump you hit changes the way the car drives. So it's hard to really predict, as a driver, what the car is going to do until it does it when you're on a bumpy surface. That's very challenging and requires a more disciplined skill set to drive. It rewards some and obviously doesn't reward others. It requires a little bit more feel, so I think it rewards some of the more talented drivers, as well.'

Dale Earnhardt Jr was 7th in practice and qualified in 7th as well.  His take on the bumps is very simple, engineers need to listen to the drivers input carefully.

Earnhardt says it's a fine line drivers face in racing on the bumps at Kentucky.

'With our cars, you've got to get them close to the ground to get the best aero platform and downforce that you can get. But, you can't be on the ground too hard and the bumps really make that a challenge for the engineers,' Earnhardt said. 'With a bumpy track the splitter is always banging on the ground, so you have to listen to the driver really when it comes to the bumpy tracks. He'll tell you the splitter is bothering the car and making it tight. It's kind of tough. That's really a challenge.'

The high temperature for Sparta on Saturday is expected to be 100 degrees, and it won't be much cooler at the race's scheduled 7:45 p.m. ET start time. During Happy Hour on Friday, an excessive heat warning was in effect. It was 95 degrees when the session began, with an on-track temperature of 139 degrees. It is believed to be the highest temperature for an on-track event at Kentucky, topping the old mark of 130 degrees set in an IRL event in 2005.

'Yeah, it is definitely toasty and I am glad it is a night race and not a day race,'Matt Kenseth said. 'Hopefully when the sun gets down and cools off a little it will be nicer not just for us but the fans and crews working down there. Getting rid of the sun will help a little bit but it is going to be the hottest race all year, for sure.'

Michael Waltrip said he hadn't run at a track like this in a couple of years and the hot temperatures made for a cautious driver.

'I picked a heck of a day to come out of retirement,' quipped Waltrip, who hasn't made a start on a 1.5-mile track since Homestead in the 2009 season finale. 'I was just really careful ' didn't want to make a mistake. It was a struggle, but we tested here in the winter when you had more grip and now it's hotter than it's ever been and it's slippery.'

Review: 2012 Dodge Charger R/T

Ask your average car buff to define what a traditional American four door sedan is. After pondering the question for a moment, what may come to mind is a big, rear wheel drive sedan with plenty of room, a big trunk, and definitely available V-8 power. It is a formula that worked and was extremely successful in America for decades. In 2012, however, the Charger is in a class by itself. The Ford Taurus is a fine car, while Chevy's Impala has been in need of replacement for years, but neither of those company's largest offerings have the formula of the classic, American full-size four door sedan. The question is, does that old formula still work in 2012? Or is the Charger just a rolling anachronism of a time gone by? Read on to find out.

The Charger returned to the Dodge line as a 2006 model after a long absence, and was a radical departure from the front-wheel drive Intrepid it replaced. Instead of the smooth, jellybean Intrepid, the Charger was in your face with aggressive styling. Well received at first, the Charger suffered from the malaise and lack of product development that was rampant at Dodge for the latter half of the 2000's. As we know now, Dodge has undertaken an enormous initiative to update its cars, and the Charger finally received its first major revision in 2011.

The Charger remains the most aggressively styled mainstream full-size sedan available today. While the Charger may have Mercedes-Benz sourced bits mechanically, from the outside the Charger is full on, wave the flag American and proud of it. The sculpted hood and sides recall the muscle car the original Charger was, but xenon and LED lighting keep the Charger from being a rehashed retromobile. Our test car, finished in Redline Pearl was easy to spot, and you won't mistake the Charger for any other car. With the Charger, Dodge has managed to style a full-size sedan with serious muscle car undertones yet manages the fine line from going over the top. Yes, it's aggressive, but you won't feel like a fool at the country club or rolling up to the valet at your favorite restaurant.

If the Charger had one glaring flaw, it was its interior. Plagued with cheap materials, blocky, uninspired styling, the cabin of the Charger was pretty depressing. Dodge has thankfully righted the ship, and I am happy to say the new Charger's cabin was a revelation. When Dodge delivered the Charger, I swung upon the door, and upon seeing the gorgeous black and tan interior, I was dumbfounded at the light years of progress the interior designers at Dodge had made. Our Charger was brimming with the latest in technology but managed to be very user friendly. And the basic ingredients that made the Charger a success at first were there-a roomy cabin, spacious rear seat and large trunk.

Buyers have some compelling choices for engines with the revised Charger. In the past, a V-6 Charger had 'rental car' written all over it. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. The base Charger receives Chrysler's new Pentastar 3.6L V-6, good for 292hp. The Garage first sampled the new engine in the Charger's little brother, the Avenger, and we came away impressed. While a five-speed automatic is standard on the base car, a new eight-speed automatic is available that offers substantially better fuel economy. Our test car was an R/T, which means we had the 5.7L Hemi V-8, belting out a healthy 370hp, paired to a five-speed automatic. V-6 and V-8 Chargers are available with either rear or all-wheel drive. In spite of a powerful honking Hemi residing under the hood, our Charger R/T was very low key on start up and puttering around town. You really had to stomp on it to hear the wrath of that glorious V-8, which pushed the big, heavy Charger with ease. The Charger never lets you forget it is a big car, but that said handling is pretty sharp, yet far more refined than I had expected. I don't say this often, but the Charger R/T is a car that would be perfect to drive cross country.

The base Charger starts at $25,595USD, which I consider a more than fair starting point. Our test car was the R/T with all-wheel drive, which starts at $32,145, and comes well equipped. Our tester included the Max package, which added ventilated front seats, SiriusXM Traffic, Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, back up camera, Garmin navigation, nine speaker premium audio, power adjustable pedals, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and heated/cooled cupholders. Other options included the paint, power sunroof and rear spoiler. Including delivery, our Charger R/T rang in at $40,645. Cheap? No, but for the size, power, comfort and up to the minute technology and all-wheel drive to boot, the Charger R/T represents quite a bargain for what you are paying for.

There are those out there who might consider the Charger to be an automotive dinosaur, but I would have to disagree. Options for people wanting a full-size sedan are plentiful, but how you can you get excited about an Impala or Toyota Avalon? The Charger represents the size, swagger, presence and power that were once the hallmark of the American family car that Chevy and Ford have shied away from. While it pays homage to its past, the Charger is bristling with the latest in technology. For features and bang for your buck, the Charger is tough to beat.

Hyundai Expands Elantra Family with New Coupe

At one time the Elantra was a one trick pony, sold only as a compact four door sedan. The times have changed, with the addition of the Elantra GT and now, the Elantra Coupe. The Coupe, which will be available later this month has its sights aimed directly on the Honda Civic Coupe. Hyundai boasts the Elantra Coupe has more power, better fuel economy and more standard features than the Honda. Hyundai is also quick to point out the Elantra Coupe offers more interior space than the Nissan Altima Coupe, and both Honda Civic and Accord Coupe.

The Elantra Coupe is powered by a 1.8L four cylinder rated at 148hp. Buyers can choose from either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, which adds an extra $1,000 to the price. Hyundai claims an Elantra Coupe with the manual tranny should be good for 40MPG on the highway. Hyundai is offering the Elantra Coupe in base GS and sporty SE trim. We have broken down equipment and pricing below.

Hyundai Elantra Coupe GS: $17,445USD

For a base model, the Elantra Coupe GS comes with a generous amount of standard equipment, starting with 16' alloys, foglights, six speaker audio with iPod jack and SiriusXM satellite radio, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth and heated seats. The comparably priced Civic LX Coupe lacks many of these features.

Hyundai Elantra Coupe SE: $19,745

Hyundai is marketing the SE as the sporty Elantra Coupe. Upgrades include 17' alloys, sport-tuned suspension, leather interior, sunroof, aluminum pedals and a rear spoiler. You will pay nearly $1,400 more for a comparable Civic EX Coupe, and be without the sport-tuned suspension, spoiler and settle for smaller wheels. And you cannot get the Civic with a manual transmission if you want leather.

Hyundai is guilty of the same crime. While the top-spec SE is available with either a manual or automatic, if you desire the Technology Package you must forgo the joy of shifting for yourself. For an additional $2,350, features include Navigation, rearview camera, premium audio, dual-zone auto climate control and push button start, but you have to settle for an automatic.

With the Elantra Coupe, Hyundai has expanded the line but the real story here is how the press release was worded. Hyundai is making no bones that it is going for the jugular with Honda. With Honda's weak redesign of the Civic which seemed little more than a retread of the older car, Hyundai is churning out new, and most importantly, very good cars at a positively feverish pace. The momentum Hyundai has built up in recent years is nothing short of astonishing, and shows no sign of slowing.

NASCAR ' Ambrose Out to Prove He Is The Fastest Man in Nascar, Takes The Pole in Sonoma

Marcos Ambrose sit on the pole in Sonoma for the Toyota/SaveMart 350

Fastest man in NASCAR since 1987 in Michigan.  Fastest man on the track in Sonoma.  Marcos Ambrose is a man on fire.  While he is well known for his prowess on the road courses and is always expected to run well, Ambrose always steps it up to show his skills earned from his years of running the Aussie V8's.  'I don't know if I got it all, but I got a lot of it,' Ambrose said after his lap, which averaged 95.262 mph.

'We put a lot of effort into this road-course program,' said Ambrose, whose only cup win to date was  last year on the road course at Watkins Glen. 'I'm thrilled for my team and it takes a whole team to qualify on pole two weeks in a row.'

Ambrose knocked Jimmie Johnson off the provisional pole to take the tops spot and then had to wait out the final 6 drivers to see if his time would hold.  Jeff Gordon, who had run the fastest in first practice, was his biggest concern.

Jeff Gordon will Start second in Sonoma today.

'I thought it was a really good lap,' Gordon said. 'Hey, you've got to credit where credit is due: Marcos laid down a heck of a lap and we came up just a little bit short. We knew that was going to be a tough lap to beat.'

Gordon will start on the outside of row 1 as his best efforts ended with a second fastest time.

Jimmie Johnson, who starts in third after seeing his time knocked down by Ambrose, feels that he has been struggling with the car all weekend.

Jimmie Johnson's time held for a third place starting position

'We've been really struggling on comfort in the car since we unloaded,' Johnson said. 'Clearly the speed is in the car, but the comfort is not quite there. We just worked on qualifying trim and it was on edge the whole lap. I hope that we can get some rear grip in the car and get things to calm down for the race, because I don't want (to) drive 110 laps the way it drove today.'

NASCAR ' Dale Earnhardt Jr. Breaks The Drought and Wins in Michigan!

Dale Earnhardt Jr does a celebration burnout after his win in the Quicken Loans 400 at MIS ending his 4 year winless streak.

4 years ago almost to the day was the last time we saw Dale Earnhardt Jr in Victory lane.  4 long years of self doubt and frustration washed away as he dominated the race.  4 years of fans feeling as if they had to defend their driver, all erased.  A new slated has been drawn and Jr has found more confidence in his team.  As he stood in victory lane he announced to the world that he is a contender for the championship  and that no one should count him out just yet.

After setting the 2nd fastest time in first practice on Friday, Jr's car was never outside the top 10 in speeds.  Qualifying only 17th however had the fans a little bit nervous.  Couple that with a Goodyear mandated tire change because of the newly paved surface causing possible racing issues, which threw off the balance of a lot of cars, Jr's included and this could have been a recipe for disaster instead of a trip to victory lane.  Steve Letarte, known for being an excellent cheerleader, never lost focus, and never let Jr lose focus either.  They came in early on the first caution and made whole sale changes to the car to get it where Jr liked it.  There was an improvement as Jr restarted 37th and drover forward through the field, but it wasn't perfect.  On the second caution Jr came in again and this time Letarte hit on something that made it work.  It was a whole new ball game as Jr drove his way from 14th all the way to the front of the field, allowing him to lead the most laps (95 laps lead) and win the race.

'I know you guys have been waiting on that one,' Earnhardt radioed to his crew after crossing the finish line. 'I know I have.'

Jr was glowing in victory circle, but he gave all the praise to his team, his crew chief, and to his fans who have stuck with him through all of the ups and downs since his last win, which was also right here in Michigan.

Jr raises the trophy in Victory Circle after the Quicken Loans 400 at MIS

'Winning races is all you ever want,' Earnhardt said in Victory Lane. 'You work real hard to get there, and I've got to thank [team owner] Rick Hendrick, the whole organization, really, for sticking with me.

'They could have picked another route, but they stuck with me, and we're back in Victory Lane. I appreciate everybody's support ' Rick, the company, the fans, my team ' everybody.'

'The worst feeling, riding around there with 15 laps to go,' Earnhardt admitted. 'I kept wondering what was going to happen, how you were going to lose. Those last 15 laps couldn't go by fast enough. ' I was in there, just going crazy. I'm looking all around the race track, looking for debris around the next corner. I just knew I was going to come around the next corner and see a big piece of metal laying in the middle of the race track.

'I was just waiting for something to happen. That was terrifying, to be honest with you. I kept thinking of Steve and the team and about how hard all of us have worked, and about how we deserved to win and how we should win ' and I was hoping it would happen for everybody.'

Teammate Jimmie Johnson had high praise for Jr after the race.

Jimmie Johnson climbs into his car before the start of the Quicken Loans 400

'This is so great. I'm just proud of Junior. He's been chipping away at it for a while ' especially this year,' Johnson said after congratulating Earnhardt in Victory Lane. 'The communication and the camaraderie between he and Stevie and throughout our shop, I should say, has been amazing. Internally, we've seen this coming. I'm just happy for him to get this off his back now.

'That will shut anybody up who has had anything to say. There's only one way you really want to win ' and that's by kicking everybody's ass. And that's what he did today.'

And so did Jeff Gordon, another Hendrick Teammate.

'It's amazing for the sport,' Gordon said. 'You know it's going to be everywhere. It's going to be headlines and it's going to get a lot of attention ' as it should. I mean, he won. He did a great job, and he deserves all the credit in the world for it.'

Second place finisher, Tony Stewart, who is known for his sarcastic remarks and comments was obviously tired of answering question about Jr breaking the drought hd this to say.

'It's no different than anybody else that does it ' it's not a national holiday, guys,' Stewart said. 'This morning they were celebrating the fourth anniversary of his last win, so I guess we're all in a state of mourning now, 'cause he's broke that string now, so I wonder what we're all supposed to think.'

Matt Kenseth prepares to enter his car before the race.

Matt Kenseth, who finished third and remains 1st in points by 4 over Earnhardt Jr, was much more gracious in his comments about his long time friend and racing adversary.

'This year you could see it going to be a matter of time,' Kenseth said. 'They've really been the guys ' that No. 88 has had a ton of speed. They haven't always gotten the finishes [because of] circumstances, but they've been battling up there in the top five each and every week. They've finished every lap.

'I'm really happy for him to get that win. The championship part, I think they're definitely a contender. They've been right up there in the mix each and every race, no matter what size or shape the race track. I think they're definitely, at this point in the season, one of the favorites.'

Whatever you may think about Dale Earnhardt Jr, anyone can see that he has held grace under pressure the entire time since his last win.  Rarely did he show his frustrations, and when he did it was obvious that he was doing his best to hold it all in.  That is why his fans have stuck with him and never doubted that this day would arrive.

Next week we head to Sonoma California for the first road course of the season.  Expect a different result for sure as Marcos Ambrose, after feeling his fame for being the fastest man in NASCAR after taking the pole in Michigan, returns to his element with his new found confidence.

NASCAR ' Ambrose Sets a Record Pace In Michigan ' Tire Issues May Cause Problems

Marcos Ambrose crosses the finish line at 203.241mph making him the Fastest man in NASCAR since 1987, and setting a record breaking pace that no one else could catch.

They knew it was going to be a record breaking day.  Everyone had seen the speeds in practice and all of the predictions were that the record would fall, repeatedly, until a new record was set.  Marcos Ambrose was not the first driver to go faster than the previous record qualifying lap in Michigan yesterday, but he was definitely the last.  Heading out under the bright sunshine, Ambrose went out and set a blistering pace of 203.241 mph (35.426 seconds) making him the fastest man in NASCAR since 1987 when Bill Elliot hit 203.827 mph at Talladega and put him on the pole for the Quicken Loans 400.  Ambrose then had to sit patiently on pit road waiting as 16 other cars qualified after him, trying to knock him off the top.

Kevin Harvick has set the previous fastest speed of 202.037 mph, before Ambrose came on to the track, which was still good enough for the outside of row 1 in second place.

Greg Biffle has been the fastest car in practice and looked to have the best shot at it, but with a little wiggle through turn 3 Biffle lost some speed and brought his lap speed to 201.816 mph, which was good enough for third.

Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman, the previous MIS record holder, round out the top 5.

With all of the grip in the asphalt because of the repave the cars were setting record speeds throughout testing on Thursday and both practices on Friday.  Drivers were not complaining about the speeds however, they were enjoying it.  Many stated that the 200+mph speeds felt no different than running at 180mph because of the smooth track surface.  The grip however was creating havoc with the tires.  Goodyear noticed during testing and practice that the tires were blistering and tearing apart under track conditions and the speeds that were being reached.

Kevin Harvick climbing out of his car after his qualifying run.

'Our biggest concern right now is we've seen several of those situations through the garage,' Kevin Harvick said. 'I don't know that many people ran enough laps to really get to the blistering point. It's either going to come down to the race track getting more rubber on it and the speeds slowing down, or it's just going to come down to you slowing down and managing the pace to keep the tires on the car.'

Greg Stucker, competition director for Goodyear gave their reasoning behind the decision.

'We ran about 36.4 [seconds] in our test [in April],' Stucker said. 'That was the fastest lap, and obviously, we're running significantly faster than that now. We knew it would be faster but not quite as fast as it is.

'The blistering is definitely heat-related. It's aggravated by particular setups. That's why we're seeing it predominately on some people and not at all on others.'

NASCAR mandated an extra practice session after the Nationwide race on Saturday night to give the teams a chance to test the new tire brought to the track and adjust their setups accordingly.  The 1200 new tires were shipped from Charlotte and did not arrive at the track until Saturday afternoon leaving very little time to get in another testing session.

Some of the drivers were glad that Goodyear had made the call that they did citing the safety of the drivers.  Carl Edwards feels that the decision was the right one and that everything will be just fine.

'I'm forecasting that we'll be just fine and won't have any issues. ' What's been done here is that we took a track and a tire that was very simple to drive, straightforward with tons of grip, and they took some of that grip away and put it in the drivers and crew chiefs' hands and made the cars a little harder to drive.'

Other drivers such as Pole sitter Marcose Ambrose and fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. seemed to disagree.

'This ain't cool,' Earnhardt said.

Ambrose added a bit more detail to his reasoning saying, 'We were out there trying to save miles on the engine, so we never really busted off a good run. The tire is very different. It hasn't got much grip. You are loose in, shake in the middle and then on the gas [you] spin yourself out. It feels unbalanced and a little bit wobbly ' and you don't want to be wobbly at 200 miles per hour. You want to feel like the car is underneath you.'

The new tires brought to the track were manufactured in 2006 when Goodyear had concerns about grip with the repave in Charlotte that season.  The harder compound will reduce grip and therefor reduce speeds as well.  This was proven in the final practice session last night.  Greg Biffle set the top speed at 195.684mph.

As is usual with changes like these there have been mixed reviews about the decision with drivers and team owners falling on both sides of the discussion.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. thinks the decision to switch the tires 'would be debated for a long time.'.

NYC Police Museum Classic RMP Show

Once a year in downtown Manhattan, a special kind of car show lines the block of Old Slip on the East Side. Special because there are no hot rods with painted flames, no low riders or donks, rat rods or gassers; nothing is chopped, modded or blown, and no rockabilly or classic rock bands play to foment nostalgia ' it's all vintage police cars. This year's NYC Police Museum Classic RMP Show featured around 31 police cars, or 34 if you count the TV cars KITT, the Batmobile, and a Hazzard County Sheriff car. Plus one outlaw car, the infamous orange General Lee Charger, complete with a horn playing 'Dixie.' While Knight Rider was a tv series in the 80's, adults and kids alike flocked to the Pontiac Trans Am's cycling front light and recorded quips from the original show.

Half of the cars were classic police cars from various US states. At the beginning of the line up was an unrestored beige '66 Dodge Polara from Monroe County, Pennsylvania, that was continuously used by the police department until 1991 ' retired only then because it had to be insured as an antique. Two Florida Highway Patrol '89 Mustangs were there, one with the passenger door open to the public to display the communications gadgetry in the front seat. A '55 Ford Fairlane from Jefferson County consistently drew small crowds, and later on, actually blew the still-working siren. Of course, amongst the Ford Fairlanes, Chevy Caprices, and Dodge Diplomats were some names that are now memories, such as the Plymouth Fury and Pontiac Catalina. A NYPD 1976 Pontiac LeMans, driven to NY from Atlanta, Georgia, won the Longest Distance Traveled award.  Best in Show was won by Mike Murphy's '74 California Highway Patrol (CHP) Dodge Monaco.

The NYPD cars were parked together on the second half of the block. All of the cars were privately owned, many by current and retired officers, save for a 1972 Fury and two transit police cars that are still owned by the NYPD. At first glance, it looked like any block with a police precinct, as the familiar blue and white paint scheme is easily identifiable to anyone who has spent time in NYC. With a closer look, you saw the shapes of the cars changing and regressing in date until you got to the '72 Fury, representing the last year that NY Police cars were painted black and green with a white roof. Bookending the show were two magnificent black and green Ford Fairlanes, one a '59 and the last a '58. There was one last relic if you went around the corner ' a dusty old Ford paddy wagon, no year given.

If you missed it this year, the NYC Police Museum will hold their annual car show the same time next year, the second weekend in June, and is free to attend.

Review: 2012 Honda CR-V

I'd excuse you if you thought the Honda CR-V was the company's first attempt at a tall wagon, but you would be incorrect. That distinction belongs to the Honda Civic Wagon, sold in the US from 1984 to 1991, a car that has now achieved cult-like status with the Honda diehards who appreciated its simplicity, durability, all-weather handling and cargo capacity. The first CR-V's were introduced as 1996 models, and retained many of the traits of the Civic Wagon. Let's face it, a lot has changed in the intervening years, and for 2012, Honda has redesigned the CR-V. Now in its fourth generation, has the CR-V remained current? Read on to find out.

The CR-V has been wildly successful for Honda. At its inception, the term 'crossover' hadn't been invented, so many referred to small, car-based SUVs as 'cute utes' in the 1990's. Today, with the crossover having replaced the SUV as the preferred mode of transport for American families, the CR-V remains at or near the top of the heap for compact crossover sales. While the first CR-V's were fairly plain and utilitarian, the CR-V has grown in size and with the introduction of the third generation car in 2007, received some curves for a more car-like look. The move away from boxy utilitarian was a raging success for Honda.

It comes as no surprise then the 2012 CR-V is a very careful evolution of the last generation car. I can't say I blame Honda. When you have such a winning recipe I'd be hesitant to do take a risk and take the vehicle design in a different direction. The new car is easily recognizable as a CR-V with contemporary touches such as the grille, which works much better here than on the Crosstour. There isn't a bad line on the car, but it hardly gets your adrenaline pumping either. But, walking around our Urban Titanium test car, the aim here is to aim at the widest possible range of customers possible, and in that respect, the new CR-V should keep current customers coming back for the updated car.

If the CR-V has evolved from simple transportation on the exterior, the same can be said of the interior. Honda's reputation for building high quality interiors with intuitive ergonomics is well-known, and the CR-V is no exception. Our leather-trimmed cockpit offered all the latest modern technology has to offer and was still user friendly. But again, the flat as a pancake front seats and tiny tachometer instantly reminds you of the CR-V's mission to carry people and cargo, not hold you tightly in place as you carve up your favorite country road. For a simple to use, comfortable cabin, the CR-V is tough to beat.

All CR-V's are powered by a 2.4L 185hp four cylinder engine paired to a five-speed automatic. Buyers can choose between front or all-wheel drive. Towing capacity is a modest 1,500lbs. Our test car featured all-wheel drive and offered a very respectable 22/30 MPG city/highway EPA rating. The CR-V's engine exhibited typical Honda silky smoothness, and the shift changes were virtually seamless. The CR-V is generally well composed and handles well for a crossover built for family duty. One area that did frustrate me was a complete lack of steering feel. The driver is not getting any communication from the road beneath at all, and this proved to be the CR-V's most glaring flaw.

A base Honda CR-V LX with front-wheel drive starts at $22,495, and is a fairly well-equipped car. Our test car was the EX-L with Navigation and all-wheel drive, the top of the food chain CR-V. In addition to the leather interior, heated seats and Navigation with voice recognition, 7-speaker audio with XM satellite radio, Pandora Internet radio interface, SMS Text Messaging functionality, dual zone auto climate control, power driver's seat, power moonroof and 17' alloys round out the notable features. Including delivery, the tab comes to $30,605USD. Strangely, the CR-V EX-L is also available with a rear seat DVD entertainment system, but buyers must choose between this or navigation-you cannot have both. This price is competitive for its class, but the Kia Sportage adds a panoramic moonroof, 18' wheels and a ventilated driver's seat for the same money, not to mention edgier styling and a sportier ride.

This fourth generation Honda CR-V is a careful evolution of the outgoing car, one that brought Honda enormous success. When you are doing this well, I can see how Honda felt there was no need to reinvent the wheel here, and the updated styling in and out along with the addition of up to the minute tech keeps the CR-V current work well here, I have a nagging thought. Cars like the Kia Sportage and upcoming Ford Escape are not conservative evolutions, they are game-changing cars whose sights are aimed squarely at the Honda CR-V. This time around, Honda chose to not mess with success, and in doing so has built a car difficult to fault, but the competition is relentless, and to remain at the top Honda must move ahead. Honda considers itself a renegade, engineering-driven company, a mild restyle with some updates to an existing drivetrain seems to run counter to that mantra. No doubt the new CR-V will continue to be a sales success, but with the competition breathing hard down its neck, how much longer will playing it safe keep the CR-V as a top seller?

NASCAR ' Joey Logano is the Fastest of the Record Breakers and Takes the Pole in Pocono

Joey Logano set the pace that 36 other drivers after him could not break. Setting a new record at Pocono that has stood since 2004.

36 different drivers were fast enough to break the record for the fastest qualifying lap at Pocono yesterday afternoon.  Kasey Kahne held the previous record of 172.533 mph at the track back in 2004, but when the 10th driver out smashed the record by a full 7 miles an hour everyone stood up and took note.  Joey Logano was the man who did it, and then waited as 36 more drivers went out to beat his time. Even though he had just broken the qualifying record for the Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR, Joey felt as if he had left some speed out on the track when he slid it on some speedy dry through turn 1.

'The track was dirty,' Logano said. 'When I went out there and got to that trouble spot, I got loose a little bit and didn't get to the bottom as well as I wanted to. So I felt like I left a tenth and a half [of a second] or so right there, but I felt like I nailed [Turns] 2 and 3 pretty well.

'I was hoping it would be in the top five, and it ended up being good enough.

Carl Edwards will start in second on the outside of row 1

Carl Edwards will start on the outside of row one in second place.  He was asked about his feelings about the speed out there on the track.  The day had started overcast and cloudy and finished in the sunshine, and most thought that the speeds would have improved throughout the afternoon.  Edwards was at a loss for an explanation.

'I think it's really hard to determine what makes this track faster right now,' Edwards said. 'I don't know if being a little warmer makes it faster. I thought, as we went on and that speedy-dry and the groove got cleaned off, that people would go a lot faster, so it's a surprise to me.'

Paul Menard will be starting in the 3rd spot and the Joe Gibbs teammates of Logano round out the top 5 with Kyle Busch in 4th and Denny Hamlin in 5th.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is having his best season in points in the past 10 years qualified in 8th after having the 3rd fastest car in first practice.  His speeds had fallen off in the second practice but when push came to shove he went out and left everything on the track with a speed of 177.939 MPH.

Tony Stewart sounded up beat about his chances despite a 22nd place qualifying effort.

Tony Stewart, NASCAR's current reigning Sprint Cup Champion has had some troubles on the track after getting off to his best season start ever.  Winning 2 of the first 6 races Stewart has been inconsistent since then.  His results in practice had him sounding up beat despite his 22nd place qualifying effort.

'Yeah, not bad so far,' he said after his No. 14 Chevrolet was eighth of 44 race cars. 'We didn't do any qualifying runs [in testing Thursday], so I'm pretty happy with the way that the day started here. I think our race pace is fairly reasonable. We're still trying to figure out things to do to keep it good for a long run. But for the most part, we're pretty happy with it so far.'

Hyundai Releases Pricing for 2013 Veloster Turbo

The Garage has been keenly interested in Hyundai's Veloster three-door sport coupe, which replaced the now forgotten Tiburon. One thing about the Veloster critics harped on the most was a lack of power. That complaint was answered at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where our founding editor Gary Grant was on hand for the unveiling of the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo.

And the news was good. The heart of the Veloster Turbo is a new 1.6L direct injected twin-scroll turbocharged four cranking out 201hp. If that still does not impress you, consider this: the first Porsche Boxster had the same horsepower and less torque from a 2.7L flat six. And I doubt the Porsche boasts the 26/38 MPG city/highway fuel economy of the Veloster Turbo-on regular gas. Buyers can choose from a six-speed manual or automatic.

Hyundai did not simply drop in a hotter engine and stop there. The Veloster Turbo sports its own unique front fascia and body kit. Also standard are leather heated sport seats, sport-tuned exhaust and steering, unique 18' alloys, LED lighting accents front and rear, an electroluminescent instrument panel, push button start and alloy pedals. The fun starts at an impressive $21,950USD for a six-speed manual model. Add $1,000 for the automatic, plus $775 destination charge. With the upcoming Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS which cost far more with the same amount of power-but offer rear wheel drive, if I were them I'd be nervous. Because the majority of buyers here aren't going to look at the Veloster Turbo and not buy it because it won't win a drifting competition. Food for thought, indeed, as the affordable sports coupe war-dormant for years, is back in full swing.

2012 Fiat 500 Abarth-Sold Out!

When Fiat brought their retro-chic 500 to America in 2011, their goals were highly optimistic with projected sales at 50,000 cars. Fiat left America in the early 1980's with a poor reputation of unreliability and cars easily susceptible to rust. As an untried brand in the US for decades and with a dealer network still in development Fiat fell far short of that lofty figure. When Fiat unveiled the 500 Abarth, just the opposite happened.

According to The Detroit News, Fiat is unable to accept anymore orders for the Abarth for 2012. You can still order one, but it will be a 2013 model, which won't be available until Fall. With the Abarth, Fiat went very conservative with its sales projections. When the car went on sale in late April, there were already over 1,000 orders for the car, which is what Fiat thought they would sell for the entire 2012 model year. Based on the enthusiastic response to the Abarth, Fiat tripled production to 3,000 cars, but claims that was as many as they could build.

Powered by a 1.4L turbocharged four cylinder producing 160hp, paired to a five-speed manual with subtle bodywork and sport tuned suspension and steering, the Fiat 500 Abarth makes an interesting alternative to the MINI Cooper. The base price of $22,000USD certainly helped, and any Italian car fan worth his salt would be drawn to the Abarth mystique. So, if you want one, get in line.

Review: 2012 Mercedes-Benz C350 Coupe

Here at The Garage, we not only talk about the cars we review, but try to offer our readers some insight on what goes on behind the scenes in the business of automotive journalism. To close my son's Spring vacation from school I had scheduled a Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan from our friends at Mercedes-Benz North America. Later, I was notified from the press fleet manager that car was earmarked for duty at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, just before my loan. From experience, I've been burned from cars getting damaged in New York in the past, so we agreed to find another car from Mercedes. When I got the e-mail that it was a C-Class, I felt I was demoted from first class. Once I got the C-Class, those feelings vanished immediately.

Our test car is the new C350 Coupe. While the current generation C-Class has been around since 2008, for 2012 the car received a thorough update, and the C-Class Coupe is a new addition to the family. Finished in Lunar Blue, the C350 was a class act, and garnered many compliments for its handsome, sophisticated looks.  The shape and styling of the car is timeless, and like many Mercedes coupes from the past, I suspect the C350 Coupe will look just as spectacular decades from now as it does today. There just is not a single bad line on the car. The optional AMG 18' wheels added a sporty look that complimented the car well.

The improvements to the 2012 C-Class included upgrades to interior materials, and an improved integration of Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system. That said, I will say the C350 Coupe's interior is at the top of its class. The quality of materials, feel of the surfaces you sit on and touch are exactly on par with what one would expect from Mercedes-Benz. Our C350 was laden with the latest technological features but the controls were fairly intuitive. I often found myself at odds with the advice the GPS was giving me, however.

Our C350 Coupe was to be our mode of transport from our home on the coast southern Connecticut to Baltimore Maryland's gorgeous Inner Harbor. I knew I was getting a C-Class, but I got nervous when I saw Mercedes drop off a coupe, and not the four door. My concerns were without merit. For a weekend getaway the C350 offered just the right amount of trunk space, and in spite of being a coupe, my six year old son had plenty of room to stretch out. The standard panoramic sunroof and airy cabin made the C350 a great road trip car.

The C-Class coupes are available with two engines. The C250 offers a 1.8L turbocharged four cylinder rated at 201hp, while the C350 is equipped with a 3.5L V-6 rated at 302hp. C-Class coupes are rear wheel drive (Proper) and have 7-speed automatic transmissions. Acceleration was strong and linear, the shifts nearly seamless. Bombing down I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike, the C350 proved to be a fantastic tourer, not even breaking a sweat as I checked my speedo to find traffic moving at 90mph.

Although we drove to Baltimore in perfect conditions, coming home to Connecticut was a different story. A massive rain storm was coming up the east coast, and would be a menace to us the entire ride home. The C350, with over 300hp powering its rear wheels, was a model of composure. Whether in gridlock traffic or horrible visibility at highway speeds, the C350 was always composed. Over the course of our journey, I cannot over-emphasize how the blind spot monitoring system saved our skin multiple times. It was white knuckle driving in poor conditions, but the C350 was ideal, and got us home safely. The C350 also boasts impressive fuel economy, with 19/28 MPG city/highway. I was shocked the car got us from Connecticut to Baltimore and then to the top of the Chesapeake Bay on a single tank of gas.

The Mercedes-Benz C350 Coupe has a starting price of $42,370. Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, dual zone auto climate control, Harmon Kardon surround sound with HD and Satellite radio. Options on our test car included the Lunar Blue paint, rear view camera, Advanced Agility Package (sportier steering/handling, shift paddles and the AMG wheels), S32 COMAND (7' color screen, Navigation, voice control, XM Traffic and weather and Zagat restaurant guides), Leather seating package (10-way power passenger seat with memory, leather), Lighting Package (bi-xenon headlights with active curve illumination, headlamp washers) and Lane Tracking Package (blind spot assist, lane keeping assist). The tally for our C350 Coupe came to $51,555USD, including delivery.

As a car journalist, I have the opportunity to drive a lot of cars over the year, but I think the Mercedes-Benz C350 Coupe may be the best I have driven this year. Sure, it is a stylish, luxurious and quick grand tourer, and it excelled at that role in perfect weather conditions. But taking the same car, and being able to take my family home safely in a relentless downpour in awful conditions proves that Mercedes-Benz is on-point and at the top of their game. While initially feeling bummed I had been demoted from an S-Class to a C-Class, in the end the C350 Coupe was the ultimate road trip car, rain or shine.

NASCAR ' 54 Career Poles for 53 Year Old Mark Martin at Dover

Mark Martin grabs the pole for the 54th time in his career.

Mark Martin proves every time he comes to the track, that you are never too old to go out and play with the boys.  At 53 years old Martin is the oldest full time driver in the NASCAR garage but you would never know it to talk to him.  His workout schedule is one that many of the younger drivers have a hard time keeping up with, and no matter what he's always got a smile on his face.  The biggest kid on the block will lead the field to the green flag, in his 840th start, for today's FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway.

With conditions being very slick and getting worse as each driver ran their qualifying runs, Mark Martin knew it would be a challenge to remain the fastest car on the track as he was during the first round of practice.  After watching Jimmie Johnson get a little loose on his provisional run that had Johnson sitting on the pole as Martin began his run, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

'I'll never do that again,' quipped Martin after his run. 'I anticipated the car being loose, but I didn't ask [crew chief] Rodney [Childers] if he tightened it up. I knew the conditions were looser than they were in our mock qualifying run [Friday], and I didn't want to ask him because I didn't want to be concerned.

'I knew that I only had to make it one mile without wrecking, and I was going to drive to the limit and slightly beyond, and I felt like I did that. I wouldn't want to do that again. But I couldn't sit on these poles without the fastest race car, and MWR [Michael Waltrip Racing] and Rodney Childers in particular and the guys on our team are doing that.'

Jonson knew he had set an excellent time, but he also felt that he had left a little bit of speed out there when he wiggled loose out of turns 2 and 4 and felt he just did not get all the power to thee ground.

'The lap was pretty strong,' Johnson said of his second-place run. 'I knew off the corner, off [Turns] 2 and 4, I just couldn't get the power down, being loose, and I left a little on the table. I felt it was more like a 10th [of a second], 10th and a half that I left out there, and Mark found five thousandths '

'Qualifying's never been my strong suit, but I've been second a lot. But it is what it is. On the track, I'll just have to take care of it and do a little better job there.'

The Hendrick cars in general made vast improvements over their speeds from the first practice session into the second.  At the end of the second round of practice the Hendrick cars of Gordon, Earnhardt Jr, and Jimmie Johnson sat 2,3,4 on the time sheets respectively.  Johnson will start on the outside of row 1 while Gordon and Jr will start 14th and 17th respectively.  Watch for these cars to make moves early and make their way to the front of the pack with the speeds they have shown they are capable of.

Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth round out the rest of the top 5 for the start of today's race.

Notable names not near the front of the pack are Tony Stewart who struggled in practice and will start the race back from the 29th position.  A.J. Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose who have been running and qualifying well of late will start back in the 23rd and 21st positions respectively.

New Details on Chysler/Jeep/Dodge's Future

What a ride it's been at Chrysler these past few years. Neglected by parent Daimler and subsequent owner Cerberus, Chrysler was on the brink of collapse and on their knees in front of the US Congress begging for a bailout. Ironically, Fiat, a company who fled the US in the early 1980's turned out to be Chrysler's savior. And so far, the results have been encouraging. The bottom-feeder Dodge Avenger has been enormously improved. SRT is reviving the almighty Viper. The highly anticipated Dodge Dart with full Alfa Romeo DNA intact will be hitting showrooms soon.

There is no question that Chrysler had a myriad of problems, and it appears that Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne is still at work at revamping the beleaguered company. According to a post from Autoblog, Marchionne confirmed the Jeep Compass will be killed off in 2014.  In spite of its 2011 redesign which modeled itself after the Grand Cherokee, Jeep's attempt at targeting young urban types-especially females appears to have fizzled. The more successful Patriot, which shares the same mechanicals to the Compass has sold far better, with more traditional Jeep styling, but it is unclear what the future of the Patriot is. Still, these cars are dinosaurs, based on the now extinct Dodge Caliber which was mercifully let go in favor of the upcoming Dart.

The next casualty is the Chrysler Town & Country minivan. The Dodge Grand Caravan remains, which makes sense since the Caravan was the first minivan. Ever. Kudos to Sergio Marchionne for telling Chrysler it makes no sense selling the exact same car under two brands. Brand engineering is what nearly ruined the American auto industry, so killing off the Town & Country makes perfect sense to me.

In other related news, it appears there will be an SRT high performance version of the Dodge Dart that will sit above the Dart R/T. No word yet on what will sit under the hood. In sum, I find the news from Chrysler encouraging as failing and redundant cars are cut off, and under the control of Fiat they definitely appear to be a more focused company. The future looks bright.

Catch the fever, go racing in Ontario

Racing, you watch it on TV. You accelerate through the on-ramp thinking about the F1 race you just watched. When you have been pulled over and the red lights are flashing in your rear veiw mirror, you just sigh and think that only if you were on the autobahn this would not have happened. Or if you had purchased that 3 cylinder slowpoke instead of the V8 or turbo-charged adreneline inducing machine that you are currently driving ' or rather, sitting in patiently while receiving a ticket.

It is time for a lifestyle change. For less than the cost of one speeding ticket (not counting insurance hikes) you can sign up for a day at the race track with Ontario Time Attack, a division of CASC-OR. Yes, this is the same CASC-OR that hosts many of the races that occur on Canadian soil at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (formerly known as Mosport) and even in downtown Toronto at the Indy.

Before you start to think that this is too complicated, please realize that it is not. You drive your own car to the track, have an instructor assigned to work with you, put on your Snell approved helmet, buckle up your seat belt and off you go in your own car. For under $200 you can spend a day on the race track and get instruction to help you out. Annually in May there is a two day school for $500 which prepares you for virtually any track situation you may find yourself. You will have the opportunity to experience classroom sessions coupled with a lot of track time. The speeds at CTMP's driver development track are likely less than the speed that got you pulled over by the police, but the multiple corners coupled with elevation changes on this short course will absolutely thrill you.

Newcomers are welcome at any OTA competition event and instructors are available every morning. If the instructor is confident in your ability, you will be given a conditional pass to participate in competition during the afternoon session. Please realize that, for the safety of everyone involved, if the instructor does not feel that you are ready, you will not be allowed to participate in the timed competition. The instructors you have from Ontario Time Attack are either licensed or in the process of being licensed by CASC-OR. They have taken courses, demonstrated their ability to instruct in track settings, and then have shown that capability over a number of driving sessions.

Time Attack puts you on some of the best tracks in Ontario to allow you to explore the potential of your vehicle as well as your own capabilities. The risk factors are limited in that wheel to wheel or side by side racing is prohibited. Passing is only allowed when the lead car initiates the pass by pointing the following car by. This is only allowed in specified passing zones and this does not include corners. Professional track marshals are out monitoring the track throughout the day and they are in radio contact with the tower. Any issues (yes, it is a motor sport and there will be issues) and the drivers will be alerted and, if necessary, brought to a quick stop via the use of flags.

OTA has ten competition events at five Ontario tracks (Canadian Tire Motorsports Park Driver Development Track, CTMP Grand Prix Track, Shannonville Motorsports Park (Pro track and Long track), Toronto Motorsports Park (Cayuga) and Grand Bend Raceway. Our season began with an Open House at CSC Racing in Newmarket on April 1st, a high performance driving school on May 5 and 6, and competition that took place on May 26th and 27th. June 9th and 10th at Shannonville is our next competition event. Your car is placed into a class with vehicles of similar capability so if you're driving a Miata or Sentra, a 370Z or an RX8, a Mustang or a Corvette you will be classed fairly. You will be placed on the grid according to your actual lap times and, as your speed improves during competition, you will observer that competition passing in Ontario Time Attack occurs on grid row. And when you are on the track during competition, you will be given a clear track for three laps to ensure that you get your best possible time.

If you're interested in finding out more about Ontario Time Attack, please visit our website at http://www.time-attack.ca and find out how you can take your vehicle out onto the race track. If you are not ready for a race track, then consider CASC-OR's Autoslalom events. These occur at a variety of locations ranging from parking lots to unused runways to sections of race tracks.  Whatever your level of interest, CASC-OR has the spot for you ' even if you have a full out race car. It is not complicated but it is addictive.
